Good to know before you apply
Straight answers to the questions most people ask first.
What does it cost?
Nothing upfront. Fees are set by the National Credit Regulator and built into your monthly repayment.
What about my credit record?
A debt review flag shows on your credit profile while you're paying off your plan, and you can't take on new credit. Once you've finished, we issue your clearance certificate and the flag is removed.
How long does it take?
It depends on how much you owe and what you can afford. Your consultant shows you the full plan before you commit.
Your questions answered
What is debt review?
Debt review, also known as debt counselling, is a legal process introduced by the National Credit Act. It helps South Africans who are struggling to pay their debt. Your debt is restructured and interest rates are reduced so you can meet your monthly commitments.
Who qualifies for debt review?
If you have a regular income but can't keep up with your monthly debt repayments, you may qualify. A consultant will do a free assessment to check, with no obligation.
What costs are involved in debt review?
Debt counsellors' fees are regulated by the National Credit Regulator (NCR) and form part of your monthly repayment, so you won't be charged any additional or upfront fees. Generally, the first 2 monthly payments go to the debt counsellor for administering the debt review and legal process. Your creditors are then paid from month 3.
What happens after debt review?
Once your debt has been repaid, your counsellor issues a clearance certificate. It is submitted to the credit bureaus so they can update your record and remove the debt review flag.
What is the difference between debt review and debt consolidation?
Debt review restructures all your debt repayments into one affordable monthly repayment by extending the terms of your credit agreements and decreasing interest rates. Consolidation means taking out one large loan to settle all your debts. Consolidation loans require that you are not over-indebted when you apply.
